Natural Hair Questions

What types of products does All Things Natural use?

I use my own oils made from all-natural ingredients and the gel I sometimes use is water-based so there isn’t a build-up left from products.  The shampoos and conditioners I choose for my clients are paraben-free and sulfate-free so as to allow the hair to retain moisture.

Can I change my style when I have locs?

Yes!  Locs can be versatile as they can be worn as loose curls or tight curls, wavy, colored, or even pinned up in a French braid bun.  They can also be styled as two-strand twists, coils, braids, Bantu knots, and other one-of-a-kind options.

Is it true that I can’t wash my hair until it locks up?

Your hair can be washed during the process as it needs to be kept clean in order to avoid buildup.

Are you going to start my loc journey with beeswax?

No, beeswax is not a product I believe in as locs are rope-like in nature and beeswax will stick to the hair thus creating buildup.

How long will it take my hair to loc?

The entire process can take anywhere from six months to a year depending on the texture of the hair and how well it is maintained.

How often do I have to come back for maintenance?

For starter locs it is best to schedule a groom with your loctician once or twice a month.

I want to go natural but I do not want to lose my length, what do I do in the meantime?

Natural is not a destination, we were all born with our hair in its natural form and if left alone without chemicals hair will grow an average of ½ inch per month.  There are many protective styles free of chemicals and excessive heat styling that can be worn during your hair’s return to its original state.

How do you wash all that hair you have?

My hair is washed in the same manner in which everyone else washes their hair, either in the shower or in a shampoo bowl in the salon.  My hair takes a longer time to dry but I usually air dry it.

What is the best advice you give clients?

Moisturize your hair at night and be sure to cover your hair EVERY night with something silky.

What is your favorite natural oil?

Olive oil of course!
